Larry and Sheryl Lozier of Hyde Park, NY, wanted to make thier backyard pond deeper. When they started excavating, they pulled up a muddy, 3 foot long bone. Larry started researching what animal the bone might be from and came to the conclusion it could be a fossilized leg bone of a mastodon. He then called the Paleontolical Research Institute, which confirmed his hypothesis. The end result was that a year later, one of the best examples of "Mammut Americanum" had been excavated from the Lozier's back yard..
