A F4 tornado in 1999 caused destruction along a .85 mile path in Montgomery. Over 90% of the mature trees were destroyed by uprooting, splintering or shattering caused by the violent winds of the tornado.

The city is monitoring the preserve and presenting the preserve to the public as it returns to an urban forest and nature preserve.
