The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Cairo was built in 1942. The building was designed by architect, Louis A. Simon and George Howe. The building houses the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Prior to 1978 the building housed the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois which was changed in the reorganization of the district court structure in Illinois. The building also houses the central post office for Cairo.
