The Safford Memorial Building was built in 1883 as a memorial to Alfred B. Safford, who died in July, 1877 as a gift from his wife to the City of Cairo. The building was presented to the city on July 19, 1884. The building has served as the city's library since.
The brick building was build in a Queen Anne style from a design by architects Williams and Wilcox of Chicago and St. Paul. In two niches on the outside front of the building are two statues, Clio, the Greek Muse of history and Concordia, a Roman goddess of peace. In front of the building is a bronze fountain, Fighting Bosy by sculptor, Janet Scudder. The building was expanded in 1962 and again in 1984.
