This statue of George III (1738-1820), by Matthew Coates Wyatt (1777-1862), was erected in 1836. The King is riding his favourite horse, Adonis [1].
The statue was, at one time, nicknamed "the Pigtail and Pumphandle" on account of the horse's flowing tail (which resembles a pumphandle) and the pigtail of the King's wig.[1]
The pedestal is of Portland stone [2].
