[FR] La muraille antique d'Autun (l'une des mieux conservées de la Gaule Romaine) a été conçue sous l'empereur Auguste, fondateur de la cité. L'enceinte honorifique, longue d'environ 6 km, comporte de nombreuses tours. Elle a la forme d'un losange et enclot une superficie de 200 ha environ. Elle était percée de quatre portes, d'où partaient les principaux axes de communication : vers Lyon ; porte dite de Rome (disparue), vers Auxerre et Sens ; porte d'Arroux, vers Langres ; porte Saint-André et vers Digoin et Feurs, porte Saint-Andoche (disparue). Deux de ces quatre portes subsistent, aux extrémités des deux rues principales qui se coupaient à angle droit (cardo maximus et decumanus maximus). Les portes de Saint-André et d'Arroux constituaient deux des quatre entrées qui permettaient de franchir les murailles de la cité.
