This car was rebuilt from Army 1943 troop kitchen car 8750. In the off-season when we visited this particular car was closed, but many of the cars here, and possibly this one, are open to tour when visitors and staff are more plentiful.
The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is located in Portola, California, off of Highway 70 in the northern Sierra Mountains. It's a little off the beaten track for most tourists (about 50 miles north of Reno), but the attractions are terrific. Over a hundred rail cars, engines, and cabooses can be found in the yard, many of which you can climb inside. For a fee you can even drive a diesel train! (Reservations required.) The Museum is open 7 days a week 10am - 5pm The first Saturday in April through the first Sunday in November. Admission was only 5$ for adults and $2 for children. For more information about the museum see
the museum website.
