Fire Island is a barrier island along the south shore of Long Island, NY. Much of the island is protected seashore and public beaches, but there are also several year-round residential communities. The island can be accessed by car over the Captree bridge but a large part of the island is car free, especially during the summer beach season, and so the passenger ferries provide the only means of transportation some of the island communities.
Regular ferry service to Fire Island started as early as 1856. People would take the train from New York City and be brought by stage from the railroad station to the ferry landings. The summer weekend waves of beach-goers continue to today traveling on the train and ferries.
The terminal offers ticketing and waiting areas but Nicky's Clam Bar is right nearby for a quick meal, if you are hungry.
There is a penny smasher with 4 Fire Island images on the premises.
