Pillar Point is a unique, small peninsula of land with high cliffs, thrusting off the coast of California, just north of the city of Half Moon Bay. Wave conditions around here are very active and often high. Maverick's was named after a dog who came with the original trio of surfers, Alex Matienzo, Jim Thompson, and Dick Knottmeyer, who tried to surf this area in 1961. They had limited success and felt the conditions were too dangerous. In 1975, Jeff Clark, a local surfer from Miramar, was the first surfer to have success with the waves. In 1990, Surfing Magazine published a photo of Mavericks, triggering interest from big wave surfers around the world. In 1999, the first big-wave surfing contest was held at Mavericks. The contest is held in the Winter, subject to availability of waves.
