The obelisk is about 40-50ft high and is built of the same Horton stone present throughout the area. Francis North, one of the owner's of Wroxton Abbey nearby, also known as the Earl of Guildford, commissioned the erection of the obelisk to commemorate the visit to Wroxton and the Banbury races, by the Prince of Wales, Frederick of Hanover in 1739.

An inscription on the obelisk reads:
'FREDERICUS
