The
College of San Mateo (CSM) Observatory is located on the 4th floor of Science Building 36 and is listed as 625 feet above sea level. The observatory is a roll-off roof design and does not look like the typical domed observatory.
There are two main telescopes:
1) a 20" carbon truss Ritchey-Chretien telescope on a Paramount ME equatorial mount, using "T-Point" software for accurate location of distant objects, and
2) a 140mm TEC 3-element apochromatic refractor.
In addition to these there are other Meade, Celestron and Orion telescopes.
CSM offers a curriculum of Astronomy classes. Observational Astronomy Lab is an introduction to observational astronomy for the general public.
The San Mateo County Astronomical Society hosts star parties, Astronomy Family Fun Day and "Jazz Under the Stars". Once a month, during the first quarter of the moon, the building 36 rooftop observatory is opened to visitors. Renowned campus jazz station, KCSM, plays music while the public enjoys viewing the lunar landscape, Saturn and more.
