In front of a massive tree stands a large carved sign which says:
"The Portolá Sycamore
Oral tradition holds that this tree survives from
the naming of "La Carpinteria" - the Carpenter
Shop - on August 17, 1769 when the Portolá
Expedition observed the Chumash building plank
canoes at this site.
City Historical Landmark #5"
Unlike most Native American boat builders, who used hollowed-out logs, the Chumash built theirs from rough planks, sealing the seams with tar from the local seeps.
