Glencoe, named for its resemblance to a valley in Scotland, was the first city to be offiically founded by settlers in McLeod County. At that time the nearest known neighbours were thirty miles away, leaving settlers and businesses to travel many miles by wagon for supplies. Even in these hard times, the first known business in Glencoe was started in 1855, followed by the construction of the creamery in 1894, the opening of the telephone company in 1897, the beginning of Glencoe Brewing Company in 1901, and the dedication of the Glencoe Library in 1904.
Located about an hour west of Minneapolis, Glencoe is a thriving community of about 5,700 people.
Visitors will find a friendly community with shopping and dining options.
A swimming pool features a 150 foot flume slide, drop slides, a diving board, and shaded observation areas.
Other amenities include a 9-hole disc golf course, softball and baseball fields, children’s playgrounds, picnic shelters, walking trails and limited camping facilities.
Golfers visiting the community will enjoy the 18-hole course at Glencoe Country Club in the southeast corner of Glencoe. The course is situated on 106 acres of picturesque terrain offering a pleasant and enjoyable golfing experience for players of all handicaps. The course also includes a driving range, putting green, pro shop, and banquet facilities.
