Francis Scott Key was only an amateur poet, but he has earned his place in the pantheon for his inspirational poem which he titled "The Defence of Fort McHenry". Key observed the British attack on American Fort McHenry, September 14, 1814. Set to a then well-known English tune "Anacreontic Song" ("To Anacreon in Heaven"), Key's work is now called The Star Spangled Banner. It became the official national anthem of the USA. The first verse is memorized by every American schoolchild.
This memorial was funded by James Lick and erected in 1887. On its sides are inscribed all of Key's verses (now almost illegible with age).
