The city of San Mateo has done a fabulous job of restoring this shoreline area to its native vegetation and making it available for public recreation. The best place to start is at the main entrance to Seal Point Park. Take a jacket because it will be breezy. Head west across the pedestrian suspension bridge tp look (and listen to one that talks) at the interpretive signs near the mound in Ryder Park. Return to same way to the north end of Seal Point, next taking the wheelchair accessible ramp to the top of the hill. On the way down, you can use the broad stairway, then walk east and south along the Bay at the base of the hill. If you want a second detour, continue on the pedestrian bridge over the slough to the wildlife viewing platform on the far side (less than a half mile round trip).
Together, the signs tell the history, culture, botany and zoology of this area.
