UCI opened in 1965, and unlike other universities in the UC system, it opted not to use the bear mascot. Instead, inspired by the suggestion of two students, water polo players Pat Glasgow and Bob Ernst, and a promotional campaign led by cheerleader/marketing whiz/artist Schuyler Bassett, it elected to use the anteater. The inspiration was a character in the "B.C." comic strip.
