Monticello, designed and started in 1768 by President Thomas Jefferson, was his home in Virginia until his death there on July 4, 1826. It is now a national shrine.
The design of his home speaks eloquently of his genius, love of simplicity, boundless curiosity, and humanitarian concerns.
'I am as happy nowhere, and in no other society, and all my wishes end, where I hope, my days will at Monticello. Too many scenes of happiness mingle themselves with all the recollections of my native
any other.'
