Jefferson Island is more than the location of an historic home. The "island" is actually a salt dome, an vast underground deposit of salt. The salt dome was once mined for salt and now provides natural gas storage. Land adjacent to the Joseph Jefferson home has been developed into a beautiful garden setting known as Rip Van Winkle Gardens.
