This is a real hit with the children who visit Ryder Park, because the touch of a button plays a story from one of three characters who might have stood on this spot in the past. The text is less extensive than the other interpretive signs near here.

Text from the sign:
"Did you know?
During the nineteenth century,
significant shrimp and
oyster fishing industries were
present along the
San Mateo shoreline."

[Caption of spear-fishing from reed boat:]
"For hundreds of years, native California people used boats
made of native willows and marsh reeds, known as tule, to
navigate within and around the waters of San Francisco Bay."

[Caption of Chinese fishing dock on 19th century San Mateo coast:]
"Shrimp fisherman used local redwood to build their boats.
The boats were constructed up to 25ft in length. Between
three and five men sailed each boat. Each boat used fishing nets
to catch shrimp that floated within the local waters."
