Built in 1836, the Amoskeag Dam was intended to provide power to the textile mills that lined the Merrimack River. Following legislation, A fish ladder was included to accommodate migrating species, and in 1921 the dam was re-built, the fish ladder was updated, and a hydro station added. In 1990, a visiting center was built, with viewing windows into the 54-step fish ladder. Since then a learning center and an exhibit hall were opened. The Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center web site contains much more information. (visit link)
PSNH main office is nearby, and they have placed signs, plaques and orientation boards throughout the area which point out and explain the historic nature of several dam-related structures, including a preserved DC current substation.
