The Sarah Joe was lost at sea on Feb. 11, 1979, with a crew of five. The boat was found nine years later, 2000 miles away in the Marshall Islands. A 30th anniversary memorial was held at Hana Bay on Maui's wild east side, on Feb. 11, 2009.

Crew of Lost Sarah Joe Remembered
The events surrounding the disappearnce of the Sarah-Joe and its crew were featured on the television program, "Unsolved Mysteries."
The search for the Sarah Joe was one of the largest sea searches in the history of Hawaii. The Coast Guard searched for five days. Forty-four planes covered 56,000 square miles and logged nearly 330 hours flying time. Private searches continued for another week.
