North Manchester Covered Bridge was built in 1872 by the Smith Bridge Company using their #4 truss. Including the overhang, the total length is 174 feet. The bridge remains open to traffic as part of the regular city street system.
The unusual feature of this bridge is its width: it houses both a sidewalk and roadbed. Originally the sidewalk was attached to the exterior of the bridge, but because of the 18' portal width it was possible to relocate it to the interior and still maintain a 12' roadway. Portal height is 12', but clearance is reduced to 7' by a hanging barrier.
Current Condition of Bridge: Bridgehunter.com lists the bridge as structurally deficient; It has the lowest sufficiency rating in Wabash County and needs 1 million dollars in repairs.
