Burbank was the home of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, a builder of most of the planes used during World War II. The popular P-38 Lightning was built in Burbank, thus the city had stong ties to the war. The memorial plaque and flagpole are dedicated to those who died in the war. There are other plaques in the park dedicated to mothers and fathers. There is a plaque in the park dedicated to Bob Hope. The long-time Burbank resident had strong ties to the military and was the country's first Honorary Veteran. During WWII, almost all of Bob Hope's shows were done at military installations.
