Easton, PA – October 11, 2003 – Crayola redefined the term "Big Blue" today at its 100th birthday party. A 15-foot-long blue Crayola crayon -- weighing in at nearly 1,500 pounds -- was unveiled with an explosion of color and confetti during the crayon maker’s hometown Centennial celebration.
The colossal blue crayon was made with the help of kids across the country who contributed their blue "Leftolas" to help Crayola break the current world record of 10 feet. The tiny blue bits of leftover crayon were collected as Crayola’s 100th birthday bus, The Crayola ART-rageous Adventure, toured the country this year.
The waxy blue nubs were melted down with hot liquid paraffin wax to form a crayon so big it could color a straight line nearly 10 miles long, or cover an area the size of a football field.
Jordan Grubb, an Easton High School senior, playing the character "Clyde O. Scope," gave the world its first look at the 15-foot by 16-inch waxy wonder, which equals about 123,000 regular sized crayons.
The engineering feat was accomplished by Crayola product development engineers and Cadability of Phillipsburg, Pa.
