Fray Junípero Serra (November 24, 1713 – August 28, 1784) was a Spanish Franciscan friar who founded the missions in Alta California.

The statue is at the site of Serra's landing in California. He landed in 1770 and established California's missions. The monument was made in 1891 by Jane Stanford.
