In the 1840's the heirs of Hezekiah Rutledge deeded right of way to the Georgia Railroad. The farm came to be referred to as "Rutledge's Place" by the railroad workers, which probably gave rise to referring to the town as "Rutledge". In the early years of the railroad, Rutledge served as the terminus of the line, and a turntable or round house was located here to turn the engines back towards Augusta. As with many Georgia towns, the railroad brought back development to the area, and a thriving civic and commercial center emerged.
This is the depiction in the "postcard" murals on the walls of the Hughes Wellness Center painted by Molly, notice the autograph on the postcard. So who is Polly? If your curious visit and find out.
The community held a Christmas Tour of Homes and the revenues from the 2006 Countryside Christmas Tour of Homes went to the construction of the mural on the Wellness Center, readily visible to all those entering the city.
