The Sandy and Beaver Canal system was engineered by E.H. Gill and completed under W. Milnor Roberts. The 73 1/2 miles long canal, with 93 locks, ran from Bolivar, OH, to Glasgow, PA, with one aqueduct and two tunnels. Three great reservoirs were built at the canal summit with a capacity of 300 million cubic feet of water when filled. The privately funded waterway was chartered in 1828, and completed in 1848. The middle section of the canal had many problems from the beginning and fell into disrepair. The canal ceased to operate (as a whole) in 1852, when the Cold Run Reservoir Dam outside of Lisbon, Ohio, broke, ruining a large portion of the canal. Sections of the canal were in use for a few years. .75 miles of the canal lay in Pennsylvania; the rest was in Ohio.

Lock 39, also known as Jake's, will be found in good condition, and shows incredible craftsmanship. The structure is 140 ft. long, 20 feet longer than the average Ohio canal lock. The lower gate is 25 ft. from the lower end, which has a short flight of stairs. Sorry to say, that trees are tearing the blocks apart.

Jake's Lock is allegedly named after a former caretaker who was struck by lightning while making his normal rounds across the top of the lock. Ghosthunters claim that on certain nights, especially stormy ones, Jake returns with his ghostly lantern to continue his evening’s work.
