A Tree Gnome I am, Cloverwort my name.
In many lands my home has been, deep beneath the roots of lordly trees. Most Tree Gnomes in woods and forests live, as I myself once did. But fearsome trolls also in dark forests lurk, along with hawks who on small creatures prey. Dangers to peaceful gnomes these be.
But worst of all -- the ugly squirrel. Too often squirrels my food from its cache beneath my tree have stolen. Too often my treasure squirrels have scattered. Too often squirrels with their endless chattering my slumbers have disturbed.
A home amongst humans I sought. Perhaps a tree home close to friendly humans squirrels would avoid. Perhaps humans would squirrels from my doorway shoo. Far and wide I searched. At last a lovely maple tree, close to human habitation, I discovered. My doorway I have not hidden, in the hope that in my struggle against the squirrels my new neighbors will assist. Neat and tidy my new home will I keep.
Long have I lived; more than 300 winters have I counted. Perhaps the wisdom of my years to my human friends I may offer -- advice and answers to their questions. When humans move about, I sleep -- that you do not my rest disturb, I pray. But in deepest dark of night, around my home I walk. A scrap of paper with a question left at my fence in a day or two I may answer.
