The parish church at Tipton St John was built on the site of the original church which dated from Saxon times but was abandoned in 1797 when a new church was built nearby (St Martin), The church was rebuilt on the old site in 1854 to serve the newly created parish of St John. It was closed between 1913 and 1921 due to damage caused by mining subsidence.
The parish church of St John, designed by Wyatt & Brandon, is a structure of brick, consisting of only a nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of stone, containing one bell.
