The hotel, which was started in the building in 1857, had the finest reputation and was host to many famous persons. James A. Garfield and Andrew Johnson also spoke from the front of the Whitacre House. The Whitacre house was located on the main railroad line of the Cleveland & Pittsburgh R.R., serving as the depot for Wellsville for several years, until the Third Street Depot was built.
