Fremont Peak Memorial - Signs of History on Waymarking.com

This plaque was places by Native Daughters of the Golden West, San Juan Bautista Parlor No. 179 and Copa de Oro Parlor No. 105 and the Native Sons of the Golden West, Fremont Parlor No. 45.
It was first dedicated in 1925 and rededicated in 1997.
Unfortunately, it has been severely vandalized by people who took themselves more important than the historic event that took place here.

The inscription on the plaque reads:
THE AMERICAN FLAG WAS FIRST RAISED ON CALIFORNIA SOIL, MARCH 4, 1846 ON THIS SPOT BY GENERAL JOHN C. FREMONT

In spite of three historical errors in one sentence (it wasn't the first time, it wasn't an American flag and Fremont wasn't a general) we are glad this place received the honors it deserves.

We gave a detailed description of the incident leading to the flag raising at our nearby E. Clampus Vitus waymark. That waymark also decribes the flag Captain (not General) Fremont raised here.
