The mausoleum is the final resting place for Henry Clay Pierce (1848 - 1927). Pierce was the founder and president of Waters-Pierce Oil Company. Henry Clay Pierce was thought to be one of four richest men in the country. Later the company became a subsidiary of Standard Oil. The company was sued by state of Texas for anti-trust violations for its association with Standard Oil. The case was appealed to the United States Supreme Court where company lost its appeal and was ordered to pay the state of Texas in excess of $1.7 million in fines, penalties and interest, one of the largest judgments to that time.
