The Spink family has a long history in the publishing of the Sporting News which has become to be known as "The Bible of Baseball" Charles C. Spink along with his brother Al published the Sporting News beginning in 1886. Upon his death in 1914, Charles' son J.G. Taylor Spink took over the newspaper at age 26. He greatly expanded the newspaper and its status in the baseball world and expanded the newspaper's coverage into other sports in 1942. The newspaper was passed to his son, C.C. Johnson Spink in 1962, who published the Sporting New until 1977 when the newspaper was purchased by Times Mirror Company.
