From the ABIA press release:

New art connects the Austin Austin-Bergstrom International Airport terminal to the airport parking garage Titled Transition, the vivid, imaginative murals were created by Austin artist James Edward Talbot by custom cutting stone, colorful tile, mirrors and metal. His design is a symbolic representation of time, change and the various emotions felt by travelers.

“There is a sense of release and celebration at the time of embarking,” said Talbot. “Routine, domestic and work matters, security, all that everyday stuff will give way to flight. The murals are kind of celebratory with confetti-like and reflective elements. The line down the middle lightens up, gets rid of the kinks, and smoothes out. A journey is a sort of change. Being up in the air, folding away the punch list and looking down gives you perspective, a chance to stop and reassess.”

Not only a reflection of the magic of travel, the murals are a symbol of Austin’s commitment to art and culture through its Art in Public Places (AIPP) ordinance. AIPP funds new art by requiring qualifying City construction projects to designate 2% of its budget to fund new works. The new murals received funding from the construction budgets of the airport’s Maintenance Complex and Communications Building renovations.

By this fueling of creativity with construction and aesthetically enhancing public buildings, Austin increases the public’s enjoyment of and interaction with art.

Public interaction is ensured with the location of Talbot’s murals- on the two pedestrian bridges leading from the garage to the airport terminal ticketing level. This location is accessible to all airport visitors. Public interaction began during the installation of the works as travelers stopped to talk with the artist at work. “They told me how glad they are that there is something colorful there,” said Talbot.

“The airport is a great location to stimulate response from a variety of visitors,” said Meghan Turner, AIPP Coordinator. “This piece satisfies AIPP’s commitment to public education through aesthetic experience.”

Appropriately titled, Transition has a “home” end and “destination” end. “Home” being the limestone and tile mosaic representing Earth at the garage end. “Destination” representing the sky with sun and moon mosaics on the terminal end.
