According to the sign at the site: "In this image reflecting the key elements of commerce in the Salinas Valley, author John Steinbeck gazes on business past and present. Illustrating the history of accounting practices, the mural depicts the ancent abacus and scale of the past as well as the contemporary world of dollar bills, plastic credit cards and ATM machines. Also shown is the distribution of goods to the marketplace via trucks and trains"
