One of the most popular day hike in the Shenandoah NP. Panoramic summit view. A very challenging 8.8 mile circuit hike and rock scramble with 2200 - 2400 feet of elevation gain depending on which parking lot you use.

This day (Dec. 26, 2007) we completed the Old Rag hike as an out and back on the Weakley Hollow fire road and saddle trail. Winter conditions on the ridge trail can be very icey. There is a lot of rock scrambling. Any other time we always do the loop hike, going up on the ridge trail and down on the fire road. I don't recommend coming down on the ridge trail.
Upper parking lot at trail head holds about 10 cars, port-a-potty, no water unless you have a filter for the creeks. (N38 34.231 W78 18.005). Do not park on the road shoulder approaching the upper lot, you will get a ticket. Lower lot (N38 34.221 W78 17.190) includes National Park fee station. Come early both lots fill up quickly in nice weather.
