This is the mausoleum for the George R. Taylor family. George R. Taylor, a lawyer by training, from Alexandria, Virginia, came to St. Louis in 1841. When he came to St. Louis he built the first "sky scraper" in the city, the six story Barnum Hotel. He became involved in many business enterprises in the growing St. Louis. Beginning in 1860 he served as president of the Pacific Railroad. Taylor's wife was granddaughter of Auguste Chouteau, the co-founder of St. Louis.

The red granite mausoleum was designed by St. Louis architect George I. Barnett, who designed over 2,500 buildings in Missouri.
