Greenwood Cemetery is the oldest landmark in Jackson. Authorized by the Mississippi Legislature on January 1, 1823, it was later expanded from six to twenty-two acres and given its present name. Among those buried here are numerous governors, public officials, teachers, clergy and Confederate soldiers. In 2001, acclaimed author Eudora Welty was buried here. Listed in the National Register o Historic Places, Greenwood was the main cemetery during Jackson's first fifty years of existence.
