This monument overlooks the town of Bradford where the first Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1877. In 1903, the Volunteer Department became the Bradford Fire Department. The wooden buildings of the early town and the oil industry made fires a constant threat.
The monument simply states "Firemen" near the base on all four sides and the years 1878-1908 just below the statue of a firefighter. On the ground in front of the monument are markers for about two dozen of those original firefighters. During the time between 1878 and 1900, the brave members of these fire departments fought blazes started in the wooden structures that consumed lives, in excess of 56 buildings, and many blocks of the town. The worst was the "Great Fire" of 1878 which started in a theater and consumed over 40 buildings.
