Whatever you make of it, the Monroe Street Diner is a cluttered, delightfully off-kilter eatery that welcomes businessmen, professorial types, blue-collar workers, ordinary Joes, and people with tattoos snaking down their arms. They come for the monster omelets, Danish rolls, steak and eggs, breakfast burritos, burgers, salads, sandwiches, and luncheon platters named for guitar heroes like Elvis, Ricky Nelson, and Buddy Holly.
Opened in the early ’90s, the place has earned its 15 minutes of fame at least twice, the first in 1996 when Sen. Bob Dole, running for president against Bill Clinton, made a whistle-stop visit, and again earlier this year when it was featured in an independent film set in Toledo.
