The house is painted white, with the sundial on a russett coloured sandstone plaque. The face and gnomon are metal.

Chiselled in the sandstone, it reads. "A.D. 1847. certa ratio tempus fugit mors venit". Which is Latin for "A sure reckoning, time passes, death advances." A common motto on sundials. (visit link) On the dial it reads. "John Thompson Esqr."
