Capulin's birth occured toward the end of a period of reginional volcanism that began 9 million years ago. Capulin's conical form rises over 1,300 feet above the plains, to 8,182 feet above sea level. The cone consists of chiefly of loose cinders, ash, and other rock debris formed gaseous lava that cooled quickly.
Capulin Volcano is extinct. Cinder cones are monogenetic - they typically have only one period of activity.
