In 1842 the "Old Church of the Pines" moved to Manasquan, a nearby town, but just too far a distance for residents, so on September 23, 1843, they voted to move their house of worship to Burreville. The land that the church now stands on was left by Reverend Abraham Havens in 1854.
James Dorsett built this Greek revival church in 1857, and in 1858 the Burrsville Baptist Church was organized. The church then became known as the Orient Baptist Church, because it was, at the time, the eastern most Baptist Church in America. The name changed again in 1973 to the First Baptist Church of Laurelton.
The church is listed as the oldest church building in Brick Township today. It was added to the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places on January 10, 1977, and the National Register of Historic Places on August 10, 1977.
In 1893, a cemetery behind the church was incorporated, selling plots for $10.00 each.
