Originally a stone artillery fortress the castle was founded in 1542 by Henry VIII.The castle stands on a site of an earlier fort or beacon.

The castle of Lindisfarne stands dramatically high on top of Beblowe crag,and is a landmark for miles around.
The Tudor fort was built to safeguard a harbor that sheltered English ships at war with Scotland.
The accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne in 1603 united the 2 Kingdoms,and Lindisfarne castle lost it's importance as a border fort,however a garrison remained here until the 19th.Century.
The castle is now owned by The National Trust.
Holy Island (Lindisfarne) can be reached by car or on foot via the 3 mile causeway,which is closed 2 hours before high tide and until 2 hours after high tide,the tide time tables therefore need to be studied before a crossing to the island.
