The site of the castle has a history of occupation going back to the 1st.century BC.
Little remains of the Norman Bastion built on the site apart from a large portion of the mighty Keep.
In 1464 during the War of the Roses Bamburgh Castle succumbed to cannon fire the castle was restored and extended in the 18th. and 19th. century.
The crag on which the castle stands is 150 feet above the sandy beach below.
