[FR] Elle a été fondée en 1852 par cinq jeunes étudiants souhaitant dépasser les barrières confessionnelles pour créer un lieu d'accueil, d'entraide et de partage pour leur génération.

Dès 1855, à Paris, elle prenait part à la constitution de l'Alliance Universelle des U.C.J.G (Y.M.C.A), premier mouvement associatif à caractère mondial. Les UCJG devaient alors connaître un spectaculaire développement non seulement en Europe mais sur les cinq continents, mettant en oeuvre toute une pédagogie nouvelle visant l'insertion sociale et l'épanouissement complet des jeunes, dans les trois domaines liés du corps, de l'âme, et de l'esprit.

Premiers gymnases, premières piscines couvertes, premières équipes de football, premiers groupes de camping et de scoutisme, premières "Maisons des jeunes et de la Culture" un siècle avant la lettre, intégrant bibliothèques, cours de musique et de théâtre, premiers "Foyers de jeunes Travailleurs"... En bien des domaines, les UCJG ont été précurseurs et pionniers : ainsi en fut-il notamment du basket-ball inventé en 1891 à Springfield par James Naysmith, et joué pour la première fois à l'UCJG de Paris en 1893.

L'action de l'U.C.J.G s'est développée à Paris dans les trois domaines du sport, de la culture, et de l'action sociale. Ainsi, après six locaux successifs devenus trop exigus, l'U.C.J.G inaugurait le 7 mai 1893 son local actuel de la rue de Trévise. L'architecte Bénard, élève de Gustave Eiffel, fut choisi pour réaliser cet immeuble de 4800 m2 abritant l'ensemble des activités. Cet ensemble, unique en France, put être réalisé grâce à la générosité de nombreux souscripteurs du monde netier, dont le principal, l'Américain James Stokes, voulait témoigner à la France sa reconnaissance pour l'action du Général Lafayette pour l'indépendance des Etats-Unis.

Dans un même lieu, au coeur de la vie parisienne, se trouvaient ainsi réunis pour la première fois : restaurant coopératif pour un millier de couverts par jour, gymnase et piscine couverts, salle polyvalente de théâtre, concerts et conférences, bibliothèque de 10 000 volumes, caféteria, bowling, billard, escrime, piste de cyclisme... sans oublier les services sociaux et médicaux ni les cercles d'étude et de partage biblique.

Telle fut la vie de l'U.C.J.G de Paris depuis plus d'un siècle, rassemblant autour d'elle des milliers de jeunes de toutes origines et de tous pays. Aujourd'hui, fidèle à sa mission, elle accueille étudiants et jeunes travailleurs, associations et activités culturelles. Le bâtiment originel, classé monument historique, lieu symbolique et lieu de vie, est en pleine rénovation.

[EN] It was founded in 1852 by five students who hoped to reach beyond sectarian divides and create a place where their generation would feel welcome, find help and Christian solidarity.

As early as 1855, it took part in the creation of the Universal Union of Y.M.C.As, the first worldwide association. Y.M.C.As were to expand in an extraordinary way, not only in Europe, but over the five continents. They rested on an entirely new concept aimed at promoting young people's social integration and personal fulfilment in three related areas : body, soul and spirit.

A century ahead of their time, Y.M.C.As created the first gymnasiums, indoor swimming-pools, football teams, campers' and scouts' groups, young people's social clubs and institutes with libraries, music and drama courses, as well as accommodation for young workers... Y.M.C.As were pioneers in a number of fields : basketball for example was invented by James Naysmith in Springfield in 1891, and played for the first time in Paris in 1893.

U.C.J.G, the Paris Y.M.C.A, has always committed itself in three fields : sports, culture, and social work. Thus, once its original premises had become too small, it opened it present home, the Rue de Trévise house, in 1893. The 4,800 square metre building, which was to enclose all the association's activities, was designed by Bénard, a pupil of Gustave Eiffel. Such a complex, which is unique in France, could not have been built without the generous sponsorship of members from all over the world, in particular the American James Stokes, who wished to show his appreciation of General Lafayette's contribution to his country's independence.

It was the first time that so many amenities could be found in a single place, and in the very heart of Paris : a cooperative restaurant serving 1,000 meals a day, an indoor gymnasium and swimming-pool, a multi-purpose stage for plays, concerts and conferences, a cafeteria, a bowling alley, a billiard room, a fencing room, a velodrome, and of course social and medical services, Bible studies, clubs and societies.

U.C.J.G has followed this line for over a century, and gathered in its wake thousands of young people from all social backgrounds and all countries of the world. Now as then, it welcomes students and young workers, associations and cultural activities. The original house, now a listed building under renovation, remains both a highly symbolic place and a lively community.
