ImageTaking 8 years to complete, the Humber Bridge was officially opened in July 1981 by HM the Queen.
The main span is measured at 1410 metres with side spans of 280 metres on the north and 530 metres on the south.
Originally a tunnel scheme was proposed for the location much earlier in 1872, but the geology and topography of the area made this unworkable.
A suspension bridge was chosen for the design due to the shifting bed and navigable channel of the Humber estuary.
The bridge is made up of some 71000 kilometres of cable, 27500 tonnes of steel and 480000 tonnes of concrete.
The bridge towers are 36mm (1.4 inches) further apart at the top than the bottom to take account of the curvature of the earth.
The bridge is constantly moving. It bends more than three metres in the middle in winds of 80mph and the towers bend inwardly at the top.
It carries more than 100000 per week across a dual two lane carriageway.
