The Johnson City Fire Department is a full-time career department serving 55,600 city residents as well as 11,300 East Tennessee State University students, 400 Veterans Affairs-Mountain Home residents and thousands of daily commuters. The Department has 120 members of whom 110 are dedicated to Fire Suppression, Haz-Mat and Medical First Response Operations. The department operates three shifts with approximately 35 firefighters working per 24-hour shift. Fire fighters respond from eight fire stations, operating eight Pumpers, three Ladder Trucks, one RIT truck and one Incident Command Vehicle.

The Department has 69 Emergency Medical Technicians and 25 First Responders. Eight Engine companies, equipped with Automated External Defibrillators, respond to cardiac related incidents and other medical emergencies as needed.

As of 2005, The Public Safety Officer program has been discontinued. In an effort to increase efficiency and provide quality service, Police officers will no longer respond to fire incidents for fire suppression duties.

The Fire Department has 60 Hazardous Materials Technicians and five Specialists. We are currently developing a Hazardous Materials Response Team that will meet the increasing demand for specialized Haz-Mat incident stabilization. The Rope Rescue Team continues to sharpen and advance thier skills to provide technical rescue services.

The Fire Prevention Division consists of five members, who are charged with arson investigation, public education, code enforcement and fire suppression duties. The Fire Prevention Division's fifth member is "Bardot" who is one of only ten accelerant detecting canines in the eastern United States.
