DARLING JONES
Darling Jones applied for revolutionary pension while living in Washington County in July 1834. He was born in Wake County, N.C. in 1764. His father moved from Wake County to what is now upper East Tennessee at a very early period and Darling Jones enlisted in Capt. Landon Carter's company. Col. Shelby's regiment in Washington County, N. C., now Tennessee. 'They joined Gen. Francis Marion. He volunteered again and was in the battle of King's Mountain. He died Oct. 9, 1848. His widow, Nancy Jones, applied for pension March 28. 1848. She was bom in 1813 and married Darling Jones in March 1833. She was Nancy Huff before her marriage. They were married by William Blount Carter. Samuel Huff states that the marriage took place in his home. The children of Darling Jones were Alfred and James.
Note:--Darling Jones was married twice, the name of his first wife is not known to the compiler of these notes but their daughter. Rebecca married David Stevens who was born 1787 and died 1860. The children of the second marriage were Alfred, who was born 1833 and died in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1927, and James, who was born 1836.

Pension application of Darling Jones:
State of Tennessee, Washington Carter County: July Sessions of the Court of Common Pleas
On this 22nd day of July 1834 personally appeared in open Court before the Justices of the aforesaid court, Darling Jones a resident citizen of the County of Washington State aforesaid aged 70 years, who after first being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God, made & subscribed the following declaration on oath in order to obtain the provision of the act of Congress passed the 7th day of July 1834 [sic, June 7, 1832] that he was born in the County of Wake State of North Carolina in the year 1764 but has no record of his age nor does he know of their having been kept by his parents any record but the foregoing is the tradition handed down to him. That his father removed from Wake County North Carolina to the frontier West of the mountains now Tennessee, in a very early period of the settlement of that Country, and settled in what is now Carter County, but then the Cherokee Country & the Indians in hostile array against the whites in league with the British, and daily committing murders & depredations, which gave rise to the inhabitants thus separated from the denze [sic, dense] and old settled parts of the State being called upon to defend the inhabitants from the Indians, he this declarant was when he attained the age sufficient put upon the muster roll, and to subdue the British & Tories a draft was made in the Company to cross the mountains & join Marion's Army in the South, when this declarant was drafted to perform a tour of duty in Captain Carter's company (Shelby was the Colonel) and after his enrollment in said Company & under said officers as a drafted militia man, & rendezvoused at Roan Creek, crossed the Stone Mountain at the head of Watauga [River] fell in upon the Devils fork, & to Broad River, thence the high hills of Santee, & to the Santee Swamps where the joined Marion, and continued in service skirmishing & scouting until the expiration of his term of time, during which time in an engagement at Moncks Corner with the British, they took a number of prisoners, & this declarant was sent as one of a guard to guard them to Camden where they were left & this declarant discharged, his term of time having expired which was for 3 months. That after his return home the Cherokee Indians being hostile & depredating he volunteered his service to go against the Cherokee Indians under Colonel John Sevier and was stationed at what is now the Taylors, Sycamore Shoals crab Orchard, and served his term of time, & again volunteered a 2nd time and served in that quarter & service in expelling the Indians & guarding & scouting during the most of the summer under said engagements as a volunteer, he is very confident 3 months each time being 6 months under the 2 and with the 3 months, first specified was 9 months in the whole period these services were performed during the Revolution, but he cannot state the precise period but knows it was during the Revolution, and commenced when Marion was at Moncks Corner in the South, & terminated the next summer, & his best impression is was in 1781 after King's Mountain though the great lapse of time renders it impossible with certainty for him to speak as to dates.
That he has no documentary evidence having lost his discharges by dropping them in a pot of fat into which they fell & he never calculated on their being useful to him. Nor has he any
evidence that he knows of by which he can establish his services. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension except the present, & declares that his name is not on the roll of the agency of any State Nor is there any resident minister of the Gospel in his facility by whom he can establish his said services by reputation But that Jeremiah Campbell & William B. Jones are persons known to him & he to them And by whom he can establish the repute of his having served in the Revolution, & whose affidavits are annexed hereto, that he has rendered the principal part of the time since the Revolution in the County of Carter where he has resided until very lately but now resides in Washington his casual absence was in Georgia.
Sworn to & subscribed in open Court the 27th day of August 1834.
S/ Darling Jones

[Jeremiah Campbell and William B. Jones gave the standard supporting affidavit.]
[On March 27, 1855, in Washington County Tennessee, Nancy Jones, aged about 40 years, filed for her bounty land entitlement as the widow of Darling Jones, a revolutionary war pensioner at the rate of $20 per annum; she states that she married him in Carter County Tennessee in March 1833 that her name prior to her marriage was Nancy Huff [could be Hoff or Heff or Haff—later documents more clearly indicate that “Huff” is what she said]; that they were married by William B. Carter Esquire and that her husband died in Washington County on October 9, 1848.]
[Marriage bond is dated February 18, 1832 in Carter County, Tenn.; there is no reference to children or prior marriages in the file.]
[Nancy Jones was still living in 1891 in Washington County, Tenn.]
