This dam was created primarily for flood control, but was also designed for drinking water and recreation. Use of the reservoir and surrounding park area is open year round. Each spring the lake is stocked with a number of fish. Only electric motors are allowed for boat propulsion. After a nearby earthquake in 1993 the dam has been studied for possibly requiring a seismic upgrade.
